For sale versus for rent

For Sale and For Rent are subcategories of the one Property category, chosen when you post. The type of building is a separate field, and the two are often confused.

The two choices, and what they are for

• Subcategory: For Sale or For Rent. This is what you are offering, and it decides which set of results your listing appears in.
• Property type. This is what the place is: apartment, house, condo, townhouse, room, studio, land, multifamily, mobile, co-op, or other. It is a filter buyers use inside either subcategory.

So a one-bedroom apartment to rent is subcategory For Rent, property type Apartment. A plot of land for sale is subcategory For Sale, property type Land.

Why there is only one category

Jinu used to have separate property-rent and property-sale categories and merged them, because the two share every field that matters and splitting them halved the results in each. A link to one of the old categories still works and lands in the right place.

Changing your mind

The subcategory can be edited on a live listing from My listings, and it takes effect as soon as you save. Changing it does not cost anything and does not restart the 30 days.

The price field means different things

On a For Sale listing the price is the asking price. On a For Rent listing it is the monthly rent, and the deposit is a separate field. Putting a monthly figure on a sale listing, or a full sale price on a rental, is the fastest way to be filtered out of every search a serious inquirer runs.
