Hide your online status and read receipts

Open Settings, go to Messages and interactions, and switch off Activity status and Read receipts. Both are on by default. The change takes effect straight away and applies everywhere you use Jinu.

Activity status

When it is on, other members can see when you were last active, shown as "Active now" or "Active" followed by how long ago. When you turn it off, that line disappears for everybody and no substitute is shown. Nobody is told you turned it off; the information is not there any more.

It is worth turning off if you would rather a buyer did not know you saw their message at 11pm and answered in the morning. It is worth leaving on if you are selling actively, because a seller who was here an hour ago gets more messages than one who might not exist.

Read receipts, and the part people miss

Read receipts are symmetric. Turning yours off stops other people seeing when you have read their messages, and it also stops you seeing when they have read yours. The setting says so directly: "Let others see when you have read their messages. When off, you won't see theirs either."

That is the honest design. A one-way version, where you can see everybody but nobody can see you, is a feature that only works if most people do not know it exists.

What the other person sees once you turn them off

  • No last-active line on your profile or in the conversation.
  • Their messages stop being marked as read. Delivered still means delivered.
  • No notice, no badge, no "this member has hidden their status". It is absence, not an announcement.

What these settings do not do

  • They do not stop messages arriving. To stop one person, block them, which stops messages and offers in both directions.
  • They do not hide anything you have already sent. The other person keeps the messages they have.
  • They do not hide your listings. That is Public seller profile.
  • They do not hide you from people search. That is Searchable profile.
  • They do not delete existing messages. Both sides keep the conversation.
  • Show response time controls the "Responds within an hour" style line on your seller profile.
  • Show member since date controls whether the date you joined appears on your profile.
  • Allow follows controls whether other members can follow you.
  • Searchable profile, under Privacy, controls whether people can find you by searching for a person rather than an item.
  • Blocked accounts lists everyone you have blocked, and is where you unblock.
