Reports are anonymous

The person you report is never told who reported them. Not their name, not their handle, not their email address, and not a hint narrow enough to work it out from.

What the reported person is told

If a moderator acts, they are told what was wrong and which rule applied, so they can fix it or appeal it. They are not told by whom. When a listing is removed the email they get names the reason, for example spam, prohibited item or counterfeit, and explains how to appeal. It contains nothing about the reporter.

Why this is worth insisting on

Reporting a scammer you are about to meet, or a landlord whose advert is unlawful, is exactly when it matters that they cannot find out it was you. A reporting tool that leaks the reporter is one that only the brave use, and the people most worth hearing from are usually not in a position to be brave.

The two exceptions, stated plainly

• The law. If a valid legal process requires disclosure, Jinu complies. Where the law permits and no exception applies, the affected person is told before their information is disclosed.
• Copyright and trademark notices. A takedown notice under the Copyright and intellectual property procedure is forwarded to the person complained about, in full, including your details. This is set by statute, not by us. If you do not want your name attached to a complaint, do not file it as an intellectual-property notice.

Anonymous to them, not anonymous to Jinu

If you report while signed in, Jinu records your account against the report. That is what makes it possible to email you the outcome, and it is what lets us tell three separate people from one person reporting three times. If you report signed out, no identity is attached at all and there is nowhere to send an outcome.

The reporting tool is also protected from being used as a weapon in its own right: reports are rate limited, anonymous reporters complete a bot check, and the auto-review threshold counts distinct people rather than distinct reports.

Keeping yourself anonymous

The one thing that can undo this is you. Do not tell the seller you reported them, and do not warn them first. If you want them to stop contacting you, block them: blocking is silent, immediate, and does not require anyone at Jinu to act. See Block a user.
